Train to Busan (2016)
Train to Busan is a South Korean zombie action horror film that came out in 2016 in the language of Korean.
How I watched: Amazon Prime Video
For the short of it: This movie is about a father and daughter boarding a train in the middle of a zombie outbreak and it kinda sucks.
You want the long of it? Well...
I've definitely heard about this movie for a VERY long time and I can't tell you why I never got around to watching it despite it being on my to-watch list for lordy knows how long. Alas, I was finally able to finally sit down and watch it. What the fuck was I thinking waiting this long?!
So this movie is about a father who is separated/divorced from his daughter's mother. They don't seem to be on civil terms as one of the few times she makes an appearance (through phone) it is very condescending. He's your typical run of the mill overworked monkey-suit wearing dudes in which his need for work often comes at a consequence when he misses vital bonding time with his daughter. She is currently at her dad's for the moment and isn't exactly thrilled to be there. In fact, he walks in right when she was in the middle of a phone conversation with her mom begging to take the train back to her even if she has to go alone. Seok-woo reluctantly grants his daughter's birthday wish to go back to her mother so off they take the train to, you know, I don't know where they are going because I totally blanked out. I wish they had it in the title or something.
Unbeknownst to them, there is something going amiss and it's like bunny rabbits, zombies are multiplying by the minute so uh...yeah.
Seok-woo and his daughter, Su-an board the train and are non the wiser to the shit storm they are about to endure. Father falls asleep, albeit briefly, while Su-an excuses herself to the restroom (for this movie, they refer to it as the washroom). Around this time is where once the train is already en route, is where all it takes is just one zombie to send this train to hell town.
Unbeknownst to the attendant, an infected person runs on the bus undetected and eventually bites and infects that person. Like I said, it multiplies like bunny rabbits and now these 2 zombies proceed to unleash their zombie-shit to the rest of the unsuspecting passengers.
Once shit hits the fan, Seok-woo is on a mission to find his daughter first and foremost and next get them safely to a quarantine zone in Busan. Lordy knows that shit ain't easy as they come to learn that not only is the obstacle of evading zombies but the politics of the survivors as well.
I don't say this lightly but I am just so burnt out of zombie related movies and tv shows. I must've went through a phrase and just watched nothing but zombie stuff and in the end it just burnt me the fuck out. I blame The Walking Dead for that. I don't hate it at all by any means, I might even revist TWD for my sister blog eventually but I don't have zombie related media in high regard as much as I used to.
With that out of the way, I really did like this movie. A lot, actually. It didn't help that everyone was saying how great of a movie this is so it was hard to start the movie unbiased as I went in expected to be blown away. I've been let down before though but needless to say Train to Busan was a wild ride.
You know, I expected this movie to be like Snakes on a Plane and have the entirety of the movie just on the Train. Nope. Anyway, the zombies were like OMG. Impressive so kudos to them for making it look all gory and shit.
Oh yeah and was that little girl acting or what? Her cries felt genuine to me where I couldn't help but cry myself (well duh because of the sad scenes) but man, give that girl who played Su-an an Oscar-equivalent award or some shit because her scenes were phenomenal at the ending. Her facial expressions, body language and the tone in her voice really took me by surprise.
Now that I have officially watched this movie I can now look up more info lol. Turns out that this spawned a film series. I've already seen Seoul Station which was the prequel. There's another one called Train to Busan Presents: Peninsula. Haven't heard of that one actually and not quite sure that's a good thing. As usual with any popular world wide release, this triggered an American remake called The Last Train to New York which should be out this year or next year. I'll hold my breath for that one.
With that being said, what is my verdict?
Nothing new but nothing bad
