Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale (2010)

Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale is a Finnish fantasy horror movie that came out in 2010 in the language of finnish.

This is my 100th post!!! Awesome so here's to 100 more!

How I watched: Peacock Premium

For the short of it: In the mountains of Korvatunturi a young boy finds the truth behind the real Santa Clause along with the nightmarish lore.

The long of it?

I honestly didn't think I could easily find a horror Christmas movie that was actually a foreign movie but alas, twas a swift Google search away. I'm thinking for the month of December I'll do 3 Christmas-themed movies a week and end the year off with a retrospect post. Like last year.

So let's get into this movie. This movie takes place the day before Christmas. In the beautiful mountains of northern Finland lies a small community of reindeer hunters and their families. This movie starts off with 2 young boys, named Pietari and Juuso, being the little nosy kids they are managed to eavesdrop on American/British excavation crews atop the Korvatunturi mountain while the lead explorer was giving his speech. Once they found out that they planned to bomb this burial site, they yeeted themselves out of there.

Who exactly is buried there?

Theorizing it could be Santa Clause, little Pietari does some research of his own and finds the disturbing origin to the figure the the whole modern world knows today as Santa Clause and what he finds has him shooketh! He tries to inform his dear friend, Juuso but he's like GTFO with that baloney! Does this deter the adorable Pietari? Absolutely not.

Things come to a head when his dad, Rauno, along with his hunter team, discover that there are multitudes of dead ass deer got slaughtered by the wolves (which is their main food source) due to a hole cut in the fence, they take matters into their own hands. They assumed it was the excavation team's fault they take their fight to them. Not only do they mysteriously discover no one is around but they see this big ass black hole. Oh god I totally got the giggles because it reminded me how similar it is to this thriller korean show I watched called Dark Hole. It's no relation but it's a great show. It's about this mysterious dark smoke that emanates from an abrupt hole in the earth that wreaks havoc in a South Korean city that turns people into mutants that act out their inner most negative fears. I am actively recapping it on my blog. Shameless self promotion.

Anyways, Rauno sets a trap for that dang nabbit wolf that keeled their food source for the winter but gets the shock of his life of what actually lands in that trap. And it ain't a wolf, yo.

Don't you just love how you can make just about anything into a horror movie? It was only a few years ago when my mind was seriously blown when I realized just how many Christmas-themed horror movies there are out there. I knew about Jack Frost when I was a kid but never got around to actually watching...even now but that's for other reasons.

There's obviously more to this story but I will say that I personally liked this movie a lot. It's eerie in all the right places and it doesn't rely on much of any action packed scenes simply because this is not a fast paced movie whatsoever. I wouldn't exactly say slow burner either. The event progress pretty well, actually.

Cinematography did it justice for the absolutely beautiful landscapes of the snow filled mountains and everything it was rather lovely. The music was just as lovely too as it really gave you that fantasy feel which is totally awesome for a horror movie as it is well paced.

The ending..holy shit guys that ending disturbed me the most. Probably not in the way that you think. Do your self a favor and NOT look up spoilers, synopsis, YouTube reviews or anything else and just watch this movie dead ass. I love that twist in the movie especially that final scene!!!!! Oooohhhhh I wish I could wipe my memory and rewatch this movie all over again.

It's subtle. It's creepy as fuck. Minimal gore. Just straight up perfect for a Christmas horror movie. I'd totally watch this over and over again. Hey and it's family friendly too. Up to a certain point, we don't want the little littles to get nightmares now do we?

That being said, what is my verdict?

If I saw this as a kid, I would've turned atheist soooooo much sooner
