The Glass Coffin (2016)

The Glass Coffin is a Spanish horror movie that came out in 2016 in the language of Spanish. Original title: El Ataúd de Cristal.

How I watched: Tubi

For the short of it: A woman is held captive in this pseudo Simon Says fuckery.

The long of it:

For a soft disclaimer, expect me to write about more and more movies from the language of Spanish. I am in the noob phases of trying to learn more spanish and one of the best ways is through media. So lately, I have been seeking out more movies, tv shows, music and in some cases even books in an effort to aid in my efforts. Just a little FYI.

This movie centers around Amanda who is a famous actress now going out for a night out in the town. Tonight in particular, she is heading towards a ceremony where she is to be bestowed a lifetime achievement award so yay for her.

Her chauffeur waits outside her rich ass house as she gleefully steps inside. Her phone starts ringing and it's her significant other, Saul and they're just chatting away. Regular chit chat and all. Her drive headed to the awards ceremony seems to be going fine and dandy until her phone call mysteriously gets cut short.

Amanda is none the wiser and helps herself some champagne. While she is drinking her life away, she gets annoyed when a clip of a movie she was in appears in the monitors in front of her. I mean, do YOU like seeing yourself on screen? With the glass connecting to her chauffeur completely blocked out, she tries to communicate through the intercom to politely remove this shit from her face.

It proves fruitless after her repeated attempts so she eventually just sits through the whole dang thing. It's a clip from a (fictional) movie called PUTNAMEHERE and it was a drama. The very movie that is responsible for her prominence, actually. After the movie ended, there was immediately a clip of an interview with her concerning her achievements and of course what led her to be in that movie.

She totally thinks she is being punk'd at this point and just rolls her eyes at the part where she is saying she fell in love with the script the seconds she laid her eyes on it. Beating even harder at the glass separator demanding the chauffeur to remove it.

That seems to do the trick.

Her happiness is short lived when now ALL the windows are blacked out. Unable to see outside anywhere and at the possibility of her being claustrophobic, a conniving voice now makes itself known. A voice that totally sounds like Darth Vader makes it clear that she is now a hostage and to do what he says and she may go.

You may think this is motivated by money but I guarantee you and it is in fact not. Amanda does take this seriously and chucks it up to being an elaborate prank from her hubby. She very fucking quickly realizes hubs has absolutely nothing to do with it.

Once she attempts to strongarm this demonic unseen voice to be let out, she is let go. Actually, no. The chauffeur appears and beats the ever daylights out of her.

You're probably thinking I am going to tell you the whole dang movie, huh?

I promise you that this is literally nothing compared to the last half of the movie. I think this movie has a totally interesting concept as the entire movie is taken place literally inside the motherfucking limo!! For a movie only taking place inside the limo and nothing else is phenomenal the way it forces the directors to get creative with their cinematography. I've seen plain ass standard movies shown in such boring angles. So at at least in this aspect, I was pretty damn impressed. I felt like I was watching Doctor Who because the limo feels bigger in the inside. Lol.

You might be wondering so....if this movie isn't about a guy holding this woman hostage for money then well WTF is it then? Well...I ain't tellin' ya. That's part of why I am kind of fond of The Glass Coffin. The entire movie, while not a gore movie, there's blood involved and not safe for family acts that are depicted. It touches on some sensitive topics and Amanda is forced to face herself and her inner fears.

What I can tell you what ELSE it is NOT about and it partly why I wasn't too fond about the ending. I always like to theorize what the ending will be and 8 times out of 10 I am dead ass wrong. Today's example was I thought it was not even a person behind her captivity. I legit thought it was a rogue AI. You know, since lately AI bots are being so pushed in our faces in our current society like within the past year or 2.

See? Lame as hell.

While I was watching the movie and all the windows went black, my mind went straight to the show BLACK MIRROR. What if this movie was about some evil corporation that had a glitchy AI that trapped a famous world renowned actress? Black Mirror peoples, don't steal my idea.

It's not and I am utterly disappointed. I have much more to say on this subject but today's post is about the movie so let's get on track here.

Admittedly, this is not a shitty movie at all by any means. This idea would have gone so well for indie filmmakers (and I'm sure many have played with that idea) due to how small the cast and locations are. Which is trying to set a second here for minimalism so I'll give them that. I would totally recommended you peoples to give this movie a watch. The grand reveal wasn't so shocking. They drop a lot of hints in the beginning of the movie so there is a method to the madness.

Not a nightmare inducing movie so rest assured that you will still get your scares on if that is what you are looking for. Spain, you marvelous fuckers. Thank you for making this movie. 8/10 Would watch again.

With that being said, what is my verdict?

Dabble in fuckery, fuckery will dabble right back
