Kaali Khuhi (2020)
Kaali Khuhi is an Indian horror film that came out in 2020 in the language of Hindi.
How I watched: Netflix
For the short of it: This movie is about a girl who enters a town with an unsettling history that become unraveled.
The long of it: Bruh.
Very interesting movie here but let's get to it. So Shivangi is the daughter of Darshan who just received news that his mother has fallen very ill so he takes his family to help take care of mom much to his wife's dismay. Shitty in-law's amirite? Unbeknownst to them, they are about to walk into a village that is cursed.
The movie mostly centers around Shivangi who is a young and curious girl. Once her and her family get to the village, she reunites with a playmate who wants to be referred to as Baby. Off they go and resume playing like old times. Rains downs their day so they retreat back in the house in which Baby dusts off an old book and reads Shivangi a story.
A story of a young girl in a village full of plague and illness. Everyone is either dead or waiting to die. This young girl has her face covered while walking by the fields when she comes across another young girl who wants to play with her. Without warning, she tells the girl to run after she sees this creepy old woman approaches them menacingly. They approach this old well and she is now dripping black blood on her face begging her to run and save herself. The old woman reaches the well says to fuck off. The young girl turns around and her playmate from before has vanished.
Baby's mother comes home and loses her shit when she sees the girls with the book and tells them to skedaddle. She seems to have a particular personal protectiveness over this book. Oooooh!
Shivangi is pretty intrigued with the book so she eventually snatches the book and skims into it more. She's pretty puzzled as there's dozens of dozens of girl names in this book so she's like "What's up with that, man?!"
Meanwhile, a lot of scary shit is happening in the village but it's more than just a curse but something that Shivangi and her family are directly connected to this curse the plague that follows them.
This movie is not for the faint hearted as this movie focuses on female infanticide. I've seen this movie twice as of this posting and I still cried at the ending. Victims of female infanticide is referred as a "sparrow who never got to fly free".
This movie's theme is much like Chhorii, a fellow Indian horror movie I posted about last year. In my opinion, Kaali Khuhi delivers this on a more brutal yet supernatural scale. While Chhorii still got some spooks, it mostly preyed upon psychological supernatural terror. This movie though, it's bloody when it wants to be I guess so when it does it even makes me squirm a bit. It doesn't make one movie better than the other. Both are good movies, in my opinion.
A few things with the storyline could have been more fine tuned and I feel this does get the initial message across. CGI was kind of shitty, not gonna lie. Overall, I would watch this again despite it tugging at my heartstrings.
So with that being said, what is my verdict?
Tugged at my heartstrings that's for damn sure
