Cannibal Ferox (1981)

Cannibal Ferox is an Italian exploitation horror film that came out in 1981 in the language of English.

How i watched: Tubi

For the short of it: This movie is about a woman accompanied with her brother and friend in the depths of the Columbian jungle to see if a cannibalistic tribe is even cannibalistic.

The long of it? 

I found this movie out on a whim just browsing through Tubi and the title seemed enticing so why the hell not? 

So this movie starts off with an almost unnecessary scene where this random dude just strolls around to and heads up to his buddies' residence. Instead of his friend, he is met with 2 other mysterious men who are looking for said friend and end up murdering the poor feller. Cops come by shortly after for the crime scene and talk amongst themselves about the why's and what's. They intend to track down the girl that lives there as it is said she is currently out of the country. He expects a full report of her whereabouts to get to the bottom of this case.

Meanwhile...

Over in the crazy wild jungles of Columbia is Gloria, her brother Rudy and her friend, that are on a quest. Gloria is writing a dissertation for her PhD and she is set out to go exploring the hidden jungles on research to attempt to debunk the cannibal practices from an article published just a few years prior. 

Along their trek they come across these 2 soul shattered individuals. One is super shaken up and the other is explaining to Gloria how his group were ambushed and tortured. One of them even got castrated by a machete! Ouch! I'm a woman but I got sympathy pains dammit. And they ate his genitals.

Meanwhile, later the night while his words are replaying in her head but it doesn't seem to shake Pat up at all as she hooks up with the other guy lol.

The next morning, they head over to exact village where shit goes cray cray. Will not be surprising to you but that dude is just a dick throughout the whole movie but things take a disturbing turn when it comes to the grand reveal and they come face to face with the tribe with bloody consequences. Turns out that "unnecessary" intro scene is indeed necessary. 

Call me crazy but I like this movie. It has a grotesque absurdity of charm to it. I literally went into this movie blind but it grew on me by the end. Admittedly, I had to double take once I saw the animal death scenes which really disturbed me because it looked a little too real. Turns out it was in fact REAL. Holy shit that's pretty fucked. This was the very reason I avoided Cannibal Holocaust but I might was well check that one out since I got through this one. Also, I later found out that these 2 movies are constantly compared to each other for the obvious reasons. Seriously, though? There were depictions of stabbing a pig and then another one where the tribes people were cutting off limbs off a tortoise. MY EYES!!!!!

Aside from the traumatizing animal death scenes, the movie itself was interesting. The acting was a bit wack and cheesy. Like, the delivery of the lines was all too comical to me especially when one dude calls Gloria a twat not once but twice. And it sounds so corny the way he said it. I can't even. 

Soundtrack was pretty tight for an 80s movie. I just loved the eerie soundtrack albeit repetitive. 

HOLY FUCK THE TORTURE SCENES!!!!

I was totally squeamish. There was a scene where they stabbed hooks in both breasts of a woman and hung her up until she succumbed. Gnarly as hell. Another scene where a guy is partially placed under the table with half of his head protruding and it gets sliced off like butter after he got castrated. Gross but I've seen way worse. 

Crazy ass movie. I will totally look like a freak for liking this movie (sans the real animal deaths) but it's a no brainer to see why this movie was initially banned in as many countries as it was. It has since been edited and a lot of scenes cut in order for some of them to revert the ban. I watched this on Tubi so I am not quite sure how much I am missing but at the same time, I do not want to find out. Cannibal Holocaust: you're next.

With that being said, what is the verdict?

Way more graphic than anticipated but overall quality terror here
