Caveat (2020)

Caveat is an Irish horror film that came out in 2020 in the language of English.

How I watched: AMC+ channel subscription via Amazon Prime

For the short of it, Caveat is about a dude who persuades another dude for a pseudo babysitting job but is withholding impertinent info.

The long of it? Well...

The movie starts off immediately with a man named Moe talking to this scruffy looking fellow named Isaac saying that he tried looking for him. For reasons unknown, he claims to not remember this fool. A lot he doesn't remember, actually. Regardless, this movie gets straight to the point where Moe asks Isaac for a wee bit favor for him to keep his adult niece company at this isolated house for a few days. Even though Isaac doesn't have the sharpest memory, he still questions why the fuck he would ask him though and why not Moe go instead?? Moe doesn't answer some of these questions but just persuades him to go anyway.

Holy shit though WAIT this house just so happens to be on a small island that Moe just so happens not to mention. Pain in the ass but yeah.

They get to the house where Moe drops another bomb: wear this stupid ass vest tethered to a chain. Isaac is like WTF BRO. Obviously had he known about this shit, no way would he have agreed, right? Exactly why this conniving ass didn't disclose until he was already locked in.

From the get go, things be wacken. Moe fucks off the island and it is officially just Isaac and Moe's niece, Olga chilling at the house. Needless to say, house is dilapidated as fuck. So not like my man here is living in luxury by a long shot.

I think what makes this a real horror movie is that there. IS. No. WI-Fi!

Eventually they both have a little chat and Olga tells him some family history. That her dad killed himself and her mother is a wackadoo. Good times.

As expected with any horror movie, things are never hunky dory. Non stop creepy vibes and shit starts stirring when makes Isaac get increasingly uncomfy with this stupid ass house. Weirder and weirder until shit hits the fan.

Let's just say that it was no coincidence that our 'ol pal, Moe, asked him to go to this house.

Plus he sees creepy paintings.

I'll be honest with you, dear reader, I tried on three separate times to watch this movie and maybe the stars didn't align right with those other times but I really did have a hard time getting into this movie. Third times the charm I guess. So I can finally write this post.

You may not have the same experience as I since I did notice after the fact that this movie has very favorable fan ratings. I try my best not to look it up prior to watching a movie for the first time out of fear of subconsciously letting that influence my opinion.

I found it boring at first but once I began to REALLY give my undivided attention did I really appreciate this movie. First off, potential spoilers or NON spoilers, is that just because you see 2 moderately good looking adults in the same room, a typical movie will have them banging eventually. For this movie in particular, there was no hint of any sexual tension or act at all between these two. The actor who plays Isaac is quite the hunk TBH so lowkey letdown but that is my major PRO for this movie. And of course, the scary factor is actually hella terrifying. The plot progressed at a very satisfying rate and despite me saying I thought it was boring at my first watch, I was probably being a piss baby at my first attempt because I don't exactly consider this movie a slow burner at all. The movie got straight to the point.

I dig this movie and on ALMOST all accounts, this could have been a very realistic kind of movie but there is a bit of supernatual-ish touches but other than that, this probably could have been a very convincing true story or some shit. I'll stop blabbering now but I dig this movie.

So with that being said, what is my verdict?

Disturbing lack of bunny but otherwise eerie
