Black Roses is a Canadian horror movie that came out in 1988 in the language of English.
How I watched: Shudder via Amazon Prime (see note at the end of post)
For the short of it: People be losing their shit when a popular rock band tour in a small town with diabolical results.
The long of it? Well...
People are totally stoked when they find out the fictional band Black Roses chooses their small ass town to be the first leg of their tour for 3 nights. By that I mean angsty highschoolers. The "boring" adults who reside in a highly conservative religious community are protesting against such an act of Satan.
Meanwhile, there was a discussion in English Lit class when all of a sudden talk of Black Roses comes up. This long lost Olsen sister speaks up that they will nevah stahp da rock!! And old people suck. However, later on on the night of the 1st night of the concert the mayor along with others initially wanting to stop said concert sit in on the performance. 1st song is squeaky clean as they perform a lovey dovey ballad. Mayor plus other old folk are satisfied and concluded they overblew the situation so they fuck off and let the kids enjoy the rest of the concert. The second they leave, now they (Black Roses) get all raunchy!! Woop Woop.
Meanwhile the teacher, Mr Moorehouse, is hella skeptical. Even though he left with the older folks, his Spidey senses are tingling however no one listens to him. Yup, his peers don't give a hoot.
The further this 3 night concert progresses, the more the teacher notices the abrupt changes in his students. They are collectively disinterested in class, more attitude-y, more youch mcGrouch. This rock band somehow hypnotized these cats into being progressively disdained and even more angsty. Even murderous. We see multiple instances of these paternal/maternal birth giver's demise either by their own hands or by proxy. It's now getting to the point where it can no longer be ignored... Aaaahhhhhh!
Meanwhile, the concert is hella bangin'! I mean, It just blows you away so much that you forget you even had a face!

This movie is pretty basic as you can get for an 80's movie. It's cheesy. It's corny. It's absolutely lovable. I wish I had a group of friends to watch this movie with back in my prime. It's a fun scary movie with your fellow peers. I really don't feel there is much to say about this movie as it's pretty straight forward and I don't want to give away every detail. Worth a watch even a rewatch in my opinion. Has a charm to it.
The special effects was pretty entertaining, not gonna lie. The demonic faces and shit was goofy as fuck but in an endearing way, ya know? Acting is exactly what you would expect it to be. No judgements here, it's just how it is for this time period of movies I suppose.
One thing that does concern me is that I'm sure that goofiness aside, this does tend to paint rock 'n roll in a very bad light. Yes, it's just a movie but there are actual people in real life (AKA christians) that truly believe that rock and metal music is the work of the devil and are actually infiltrating the youth into being walking demonic soldiers. My mom for example. For the longest time she made her ick for my taste in metal very clear. I was and am to this day very much into death metal music and she literally thinks the music is why I am the way I am. Lol no. That's all I am going to say about that. Could that be the reason why rock music isn't mainstream these days anymore? Who knows. But this movie absolutely illustrates from the viewpoint of hardcore christians and others who think rock music is oh so satanic. Gag.
Oh yeah and there's some tiddies in here so this movie for for mature audiences.
With that being said, what is the verdict?
Corny but satisfying

Notes: One thing I noticed about Amazon Prime Video is that you can subscribe to other services. Shudder is one of the many. What may be confusing is that if you are only subscribed through Amazon Prime Video, it is NOT the same as Shudder by itself. Weird huh? I personally accessed Shudder through AMC+ on Prime. Shudder just so happened to be included with AMC+. Sounds silly but I actually admit that I pay a separate subscription to Shudder by itself. But hey, if ya got disposable money 💰 it's not bad of a subscription. They have some exclusive content.
