No Matarás (2020)
No Matarás is a Spanish thriller that came out in 2020 in the language of Spanish. AKA Cross the Line
How I watched: HBOmax
Okay so this movie in particular is more of a thriller. It was due to be removed from HBOmax any day now and a case of FOMO gave me that push I needed to tune in as I didn't see it available anywhere else at the time of this writing.
Because I feel like it today, I will be discussing nearly the entire movie so if you want to avoid spoilers, yeet out of here! If you want the short of it: A man's one decision leads him to one's worst nightmare over the course of a single night.
As for the long of it: Dani, a young man who leads a very unexcited and sedentary life. His father unfortunately passes away and Dani isn't grieving in exactly a healthy manner. His sister, Laura, basically forces her gratuity and pushes him to accept a plane ticket to have himself a jolly good time traveling around the world and live out his life and become one of those cheesy "finding the love of life again" kind of movies. He eventually caves in and finally is looking forward to taking a break from the confines of life.
That is, until he meets this young lady and things take a turn for the hellishly worse.
Like, literally right before he is due to take his plane, he is having one of his last meals at a restaurant one night when all of a sudden a random ass girl plops her petite ass at Dani's table and non chalantly asks for a favor. Supposedly, her date stood her up but she already ordered burgers but..huh well look at that she gots no moneys. She kindly asks for about $20 so she can close out her ticket. Being the super nice guy that he is, Dani gives her cash.
He quickly follows her outside perhaps out of horrniness that is getting the better of him but whatever, right? She lures him in like a fish on a hook. He just needs a bit of peer pressure and nudging but he's totally under her influence and just allows her to dictate where his dick goes.
Off they go and enter this tattoo shop.
Things are getting a little suspicious. By that I mean, she finds this hiding spot where the keys are at. She barks orders at him to help her lift the gate. So yeah, she's like "Yo, so I cannot repay you with cash exactly, how about I tattoo ya?!" Guess what happens?
He gets tattooed.
She gets all turned on or something and then takes a polaroid camera and snaps a pic of them and hangs it in the wall among other polaroids. She then immediately says they got to go because her friends are due to be there at any moment.
Once again they leave but to her place this time. This is where things REALLY go off the rails. She then dials up her flirtation like a million percent and she gets naked. They didn't quite have sex but they did some spicy foreplay.
AND YO WHAT THE FUCK the boyfriend comes raging at the door. Things go from hot and steamy to hella murder in a split second. Now Dani is on the run because of course the boyfriend tried to kill him. Apparently the girl is equally as psychotic because she is pretty much egging the boyfriend on saying he banged her brains out. Which of course did not happen.
Dani kills him in self defense. The girl is acting like a lunatic saying she is going to tell the police he murdered him in cold blood and just like that she yeets herself out the window. Did I mention they are a good few stories up?
So pretty much the rest of this movie is Warriors style where he has to escape in alive and in one piece but of course in the case of Murphy's Law: everything that can go wrong will go wrong. Welp, this night surely proved that. That's all I am going to say about that.
Overall, it's an interesting movie. A number of plotholes. You're past the spoiler alert so I might as well keep it rolling. I honestly thought that the tattoo was going to play some sort of significance to his downfall or at least a major part of a movie like he was branded by a 500 year old cult or whatever. That was the impression I got at least. IT DIDN'T MEAN SHIT. Literally no plot device associated with the random ass tattoo. I'm quite let down really but oh well. A few others but this stuck out to me the most.
The ending was left open ended and I liked that. Dani was shown at the end all bloodied from going through all the shit he went through only to land at the hospital where the chick was in a coma. The movie ended with him standing in front of her wondering what his next move was. I felt that this was a very fitting ending because when you really think about it, what he will ultimately end up choosing won't matter at all for the closure of this movie because the main point of this movie was a single decision fucked up his whole life. Maybe that's not the point idk but I was not disappointed.
If you are looking for a decent movie with some heart pumping even racy scenes, then this movie is definitely for you.
That being said, what is my verdict?
Something to keep your attention I suppose
