Not a bad movie I tell ya what. A classic movie about medical students, dissection and MURDER. Nice.
Even as a German movie I couldn't escape hearing Fatboy Slim at the start of the movie đŸ˜–. I remember late 90s/early 2000s their single "Praise You" was played on MTV 24/7 and was frequently used in movie trailers of that time. Needless to say, this song really takes me back. Not in a good way. I couldn't stand the fucking song. But I'd still choose Fatboy Slim over current day's bullshit music is spitting out. I definitely do miss when music like this and rock music ruled the charts back then...
So anyway, this movie starts off with Paula, a medical student who scores high in a contest which lead to being accepted to a prestigious summer course in Heidelberg much to her father's dismay who seems to prefer a more modest sect. She attends anyway and meets Gretchen who becomes her friend and roommate.
I am literally gritting my teeth every time I have to type Paula I just really hate that name. War flashbacks, man. She is our protagonist of the film so I have to grin and bear it for this post. Paula is quite an intelligent woman as she saves a man her age on the train. He later discloses that he's terminally ill but is just YOLOing his life til then. Is YOLO still a thing kids use these days? I'm so out of date.
So they start class which opens up with an exhibition of preserved dead human corpses in interesting poses all for the sake of education. Even though it's clearly movie fake it's still odd nonetheless especially if you don't have an interest in this field (which should go without saying) but I imagine still creepy as hell seeing it for the first time. It reminds me of this reddit post about a Chinese woman who went missing while PREGNANT and a woman resembling her was featured in a REAL LIFE version of this exhibition. No confirmation it was actually her but still extremely disturbing the timing of her disappearance. The purpose of this IRL thing is for people's morbid curiosities of the human body but I personally can't get behind the entertainment aspect beyond it being for educational purposes but that's just me. Moving on.
This movie definitely relief heavily on the suspenseful music as a build up to the protagonist's growing skepticism with the bodies. Exactly what ended up happening as the terminal dude from earlier in the film ended up being on the dissection table which totally spooked Paula and Gretchen as they just shortly before interacted with them just a few days prior. The condescending professor scoffs and tells Paula to put up or shut up in more eloquent words. Beginning of the end.
As she dissects him she notices something about his blood and concluded that this process started BEFORE his death which led her down the rabbit hole of something more sinister.
I'll refrain from the juicy parts but that's what sets the tone for the rest of this movie.
It's an okay movie. Preferably for the tame people but still want to be spooked. I must admit, I feel like my tolerance has risen ever since watching Atroz when I posted it a few weeks back. Now everything I choose to watch since then is bubble gum pop and Anatomy is one of them. I am absolutely sure there's way more extreme gore graphic flicks than Atroz and tbh I hesitate to go that that extreme just yet if I ever will. I think I am comfortable with this bubble a bit. Just a few notches. Atroz went into a full 'notha level. I still want my humanity in tact, thanks.
Adds absolutely nothing to my post but I thought this scene was hilarious just seeing Paula's expression when Gretchen beckons Hein over. She calls him Heiny haha. I struggled taking him serious after this scene and keep referring to him as such..
Overall this movie is such a blast to the past. Definitely will be up your alley if you like the nostalgic feel of 90s and 2000s horror flicks with a splash of comedic timing. There's very few of those scene in here but it was perfectly fitted. My favorite part is when Paula trolls Casper hard thinking she's talking sexual with her dad. What a funny lady! Also it's kinda hard to get scared when Heiny yells in anger. My dumbass just thinks about this scene in Rat Race where Jon Lovitz steals Hitler's car and stumbles upon a ceremony of vets
One quote in the beginning of the movie really stuck out to me which was said but Paula's dad I think?
"The purpose of human suffering is to make doctors rich and famous"
Interesting.
Plus there was an end credits scene that was rather thought-provoking and left it open ended for a sequel. That's because there is one. I doubt it'll be as good as this one but in the future I'll check it out just for the hell of it. Bet.
If this movie had a message, what would it be?
Disclaimers? Only if you're sensitive to not so great aged special effects of 20ish years ago of body insides. Probably poor wording but I am not sorry for that.
Ages? Eh maturish teens. There is some sex depictions but nothing graphic. Plus some Heiny. From Heiny.
So with that being said, what is my verdict?
An enjoyable slice of a cool yet sorta cheesy horror movie. I dig.
