Paganini Horror (1989)
Paganini Horror is an Italian horror movie that came out in 1989.
TL;DR An all girl rock band basically plagarize an unpublished work of violinist and composer Niccoló Paganini which triggers a murderous appetite for revenge.
In the beginning this movie we have the girls in the studio recording a song and I shit you not, it is a direct rip off of Bon Jovi "You Give Love A Bad Name" which came out just less than 3 years before this movie. No, it doesn't sound like it. IT IS IT! Down to the minor riffs and the melody it is so laughable but lyrics were obviously changed. I'm surprised my Shazam app didn't recognize it. I must admit, hearing a female version of it, it's such a banger 💕 If you want to judge for yourself (for the unfamiliar)
Compare Bon Jovi >-----TO-----<the Girl Band in Paganini Horror
So anyway back to the movie. Their manager voices her displeasure of their track. Practically saying their music ain't shit and they need something fresh to stay relevant in the music biz.
So one of the crew dudes comes across another dude who sells him an unpublished work of Paganini and fucks off to tell the girls, much to the band manager's glee. She's all like "Cool, it doesn't sound like Bon Jovi anymore!" They immediately record and decide to film their music video at Paganini's old stomping grounds. By that I mean a cursed castle.
So a combo of a few things, they invoke the spirit of the dead composer's wrath and so he starts picking off the crew one by one by brutally murdering them.
There's a lot of good things I liked about this movie. First off, glad the tripped up composer from beyond the grave wasn't a major overused household name like Beethoven or Mozart. My uncultured ass has never heard of Niccoló Paganini which is a shame because I grew up playing the violin. Why the fuck didn't I know?! So that's a pretty cool concept for someone other than them being the center of a movie. A HORROR MOVIE AT THAT. Nothing's ever original so I won't be surprised if there's similar movies like this (by that I mean classical composers not just cursed music).
I also like how there's not any annoying stereotypes. Sure, the manager appeared a little overly bitchy when she voiced her opinion on their music in the beginning of the movie. However, I'm glad that they didn't dictate her personality for the rest of the movie based on that one scene. That's what band manager's do right? They're supposed to give their unfiltered opinion for the benefit of the band's career but you got to admit, that scene was over dramatic. She showed a much more human and altruistic side of her for the rest of the film for the most part.
Some kind soul uploaded the entire soundtrack for this movie on YouTube!! It's played on the original vinyl which is hella cool so definitely download this as a MP3 while you can (by YouTube to MP3 free sites/plugin) because you never know when a video will be no longer available. And yes, the entire song to that Bon Jovi ripoff is on there too.
Oh God there is. TOO. MANY. CLOSEUPS. Camera zooming into to people's faces all up in their grill and shit.
So if this movie had a message what would it be? Plagarizing is for losers. Ded loserz.
Disclaimers? Some bloody and even graphic deaths but jeez it's the 80s so special effects wasn't exactly a priority here. It's charming nonetheless.
Age demographics? Mature teens. Nice gateway into horror.
What's ze verdict?
Frightfully entertaining
