Draug (2018)
Draug is a Swedish fantasy horror movie that came out in 2018.
This movie is about an 11th century missionary gone missing so these Swedish group of swordsmen form a rescue party to a very creepy ass cursed forest where evil fuckery ensues.
Sorry but this is going to be a lazy post today. My posts are generally lazy as it is but it gets lazier. Having a rough day so you're going to suffer through my word vomit of a post today.
I'll be honest, I struggled with this movie. I don't know exactly the root cause but I'm now sure it's a combination of a lot of factors. The main one is this movie simply couldn't hold my attention. I had to rewatch at least 5 times. My attention span is pretty shit so my reflex kept reaching for my phone which is the stupidest decision to do when you are watching a movie in a different language and you need to read the SUBTITLES! I r dumb. I kept restarting the movie multiple times over the course of 2 days until I finally was able to grasp the movie properly. I ran out of my backup posts (literally the previous 2 American horror posts) so yeah.
I will say that I did like the cinematography! There's some beautiful shots of the gorgeous landscape throughout the movie over the forests and waters. Not all the camera work I was a fan of. The scene where everyone is running from a specific attack, it was way too shaky! Maybe cool for a metal music video dudes but not with a barely watchable movie. The tint was literally way too dark at some points. Could have been my smart tv or what not too sure but it was rather grating.
After some light digging turns out this movie was a low budget film. I literally would have never guessed that! Other reviewers seemed to praise the details of their apparel which seemed to hit a sweet spot for 11th center peeps. I concur.
I do wonder how many times the camera guy tripped due to how shaky some scenes were especially when it wasn't particularly a heartracing scene.
Anyway, I thought the movie was okay. Great concept for a horror film to take place in the 11th century. I literally know nothing about Norse mythology. Some people bragged how they know so much from those Marvel movies...yeah no. I am probably in the minority here but this American mexican can't fucking stand those movies. Maybe like the first couple like Iron Man 1 and Ant Man but never cared about Thor (which probably would have helped me understand more) but whatever. I got my knowledge from Amon Amarth, thank you very much!
I found this is be such a slow burn. When it did get to the scary scenes, it seemed to finish as quickly as it started. Only to repeat the same pattern periodically. Even though I watched it somewhat as many times as I did, I was still confused at some scenes and how it meshed with the plot as a whole. Could just be on me to not get this movie the way it was intended. Another reviewer said it may have some dialogue mixed in translation perhaps? I don't know the Swedish language one bit, I barely even know Spanish. However, if you are a fan of media in this time period, then you are in for a treat.
That ending though. Why?
If this movie had a message, what would it be? Don't have the audacity to be born.
Age demographics? Well I suppose it's for everyone.
No disclaimers or triggers so there's that.
With that being said, what is the verdict?
Nice take on super old century horror but it could've been executed better.
