Don't Listen (2020)
Don't Listen is a Spanish supernatural horror movie that came out in 2020.
How I Watched: Netflix
(may change in the future)
TL;DR This movie is about a family that moved to a new house but is plagued by sadness and misfortune starting with the child. Little 8 year old Eric hears voices and a lot of paranormal things that seems to affect his life both at home and in school. Things take an unfortunate turn when Eric passes away from a tragic accident. The grieving father seeks out a paranormal expert and his daughter to investigate his creepy haunted house and a potential malovent spirit.
It's a really tragic movie that pulls at your heartstrings because of the deaths and especially the ending. I went into this movie thinking it was going to be another typical jump scare paranormal/haunted house kind of movie but I think this one is a more mature version. I low key wished there was some comedic relief but there is literally devoid of any laughs or smiles. This movie is just straight up depressing. They even have a dark grey filter so you know it's serious business.
I don't think I have much to say about this movie as it's a pretty cut and dry haunted house type of movie but it's not like one of those cheesy horror movies. Even though this is a Spanish language film, you can still at least get a feel after a while on the quality acting. Sometimes, anyway. It was decent for the most part. I do think some of the scary scenes were underwhelming and was probably better off with the mystery psychological terror element instead of a visual scary scene. To it's credit, it's not many visual scenes as it is just a personal preference. That being said, I thought this was a well paced movie.
It didn't scare the living daylights out of me or anything. I did feel more depressed than anything though. As it deals a lot with the emphasis on losing a loved one and being psychologically tortured. Everyone has at least dealt with losing a family member obviously BUT emotional connections can vary a lot which in turn make the grief a lot stronger. Maybe that's why it was an uncomfortable watch for me.
Like I said earlier, I really do think this has a good pace. I personally never got bored nor thought it dragged at all. However, it's not a stand out horror movie to me especially as a paranormal and spirits and haunted houses. It really adds absolutely nothing new to the genre. But does every movie have to be? I kinda struggle with this movie because it's not a terrible movie in my eyes at all but it does somehow blend with other movies just like this. Other haunted house/paranormal investigator type of movies that are neither great nor shitty but like I said it all kind of meshes together. That being said, I'm not sure if I would watch this again if I came across this title in the future. Nothing personal because it's a nice movie and all but probably more so because I don't want to cry again.
Also, there's an extended scene in the end credits. Which was a cool addition I didn't expect but welcoming nonetheless.
Disclaimers? Definitely no bueno if you're not in tip top shape mentally. If you're sensitive to things like suicide and family death (specifically with a strong emotional connection) it can really mess you up.
Age? It's definitely a good starter for spooky views. There's no nudity or heavy cursing.
That being said, what is my verdict?
Eerie to boot but too tearful as a rewatch
