Body Melt (1993)
Body Melt is an Australian black comedy body horror film that came out in 1993.
TL;DR This movie is about a city with residents who are unknowingly the lab rats of a pharmaceutical company's testing of a new drug.
You are going to be in for one hell of a truly trippy ass movie should you ever choose to watch this film. I don't say that lightly. Anything with body horror associated with it is automatically guaranteed to twist your insides. The movie poster looks way more serious than the actual movie which can be a good thing if that's what you're looking for and want some comic relief which I absolutely needed after watching Atroz (and I'm surprised I never got any nightmares from that movie yet🤞) Body Melt is endearingly goofy yet still a mindfuck but simulatiously also acts as a social commentary which people firmly believe has been happening IRL on a global scale (obviously not nearly as horrifically dramatized as this movie). LoL that's how I came up with my blog name.
It's a pretty self explanatory movie but some evil corporation, in this movie is a fictional pharmaceutical company named Vimuville, has dispatched their drug targeted towards people who desire to be healthy peeps but has fatal and outrageous side effects. We're talking hallucinations and horrible body mutations. Including an imploding head.
There is no one main character or any chronicling a particular person during this movie which does make it stand out a bit. Not exactly an ensemble cast either because that technically implies they have a returning presence and equal parts of screen time. I could be wrong. For the most part, the characters (some, not all) in these various scenes suffers from some kind of unique death eventually but the scenes alternate like a fucked up version of I, Survived (it's a show, look it up).
Don't forget that it's body horror so you see some totally gnarly shit that involves sentient mucus, an elongated tongue, and exploding penises. Among other body grossness. The elongated/enlarged tongue scene always makes me gag! I was just trying to chill today eating some cookies and milk before tuning in which was a major regret now. Please don't eat or finish eating before proceeding to watch this movie!
It's a pretty creative movie for being so obviously low budget but it compliments the movie for being so satirical. It's also hard to ignore the campy music throughout this movie. Fun fact: This movie is written, directed and music by Phillip Brophy. The music totally captures the campiness. Kinda good for a throwback workout soundtrack too not gonna lie. In particular the entire music score in the movie's credits gave me a Mortal Kombat theme on crack kind of vibe and I am all for it!
All in all, stay away if you get queasy and even then the special effects of back then should be at least some comfort that it doesn't look real. Still a fright to look at though. The mucus is what grosses me out the most more than any bloody face morphing, rib protruding scenes.
Makes for a great movie night.
If this movie had a message what would it be? Don't accept or injest any free shit.
Disclaimers. It's body horror, nuff said. Various nudity as well.
Age demographics? My god...whoever can stomach this.
That being said, what is my verdict on this movie?
Lovably atrocious
