Mirror Mirror (1990)
Mirror Mirror is an American supernatural horror movie that came out in 1990.
This movie is about a mother and her teenaged daughter moving into a new house in LA. However, the new house is accompanied by a haunting mirror that the daughter, Megan, is immediately drawn to. This cursed mirror apparently has connected well to her so much that it inflicts pain and destruction to whoever pisses Megan off.
Megan starts her new high school on the wrong foot which the stereotypical popular crowd are assholes to her and instantly bully the shit out of her for no reason. Luckily, she finds a friend in Nikki. Sweet girl but is also the rival to the popular girl which fuels further animosity.
Simple horror movie, really. It has some bloody deaths. Standard old school music soundtrack to reminisce this precious throwback in time and fashion. Pretty predictable with the classic bullied gets revenge kind of film. Even though I said there's bloody deaths, it's not all that graphic especially if you're used to the Hostel and beyond type of stuff. I'm sure there's a shit ton of movies leagues worse than Hostel but that's all I can come up with at the moment when it comes to brutal torture death scenes. Also it's been over 10 years last I watched that movie so it's probably not as bad lol
There was this crazy tub scene death which not gonna lie, pretty unheard of to die like that. And sucky. I haven't seen many deaths like that so yeah that's kinda nice to see a slight change in execution. Heh.
Definitely gives me Hatching vibes which was a movie I posted about not too long ago. Pretty bad ass they casted some icons in here Yvonne De Carlo (known for her role as Lily Munster in The Munsters) and Karen Black (House of 1000 Corpses).
Let's talk about the elephant in the room...
This movie did come around the same time as Beetlejuice so that can explain why she is the spitting image of Lydia Deetz. Even the actress especially without makeup looks like Winona Ryder's identical twin sister! The actress's name is Rainbow Harvest and there is next to nothing on any current info about her! Here is an interesting blog post I found from someone wondering the same thing! Apparently, she dropped off the radar not long after this movie was released. Such a shame, I really enjoyed her presence. I really hope she didn't get bullied IRL because of the her spitting image of Lydia since Beetlejuice is absolutely a huge staple pop culture even to this day. At least we have this movie that has been immortalized as the cult classic that is Mirror Mirror.
If this movie had a message, what would it be? Be nice to people, you never know when they get supernatural powers.
As for the disclaimers for this movie, there is brief nudity in the shower scene other than that, no biggie.
Age demographic? Totally teen approved since this movie does center around high school. Not sure if I would recommend any young ones because of the brief nudity but you can always just tell them to close their eyes if you want but I would be more concerned about the blood and gore over the boobery anyway.
With that being said, what is my verdict?
Tight, tight, tight!
