The 8th Night (2021)
The 8th Night is a South Korean horror/thriller movie that came out in 2021 on Netflix. The movie starts off with the legend of this monster that crossed a bridge from hell to the human realm to create human suffering 2,500 years ago so Buddha ripped out the Red eye and the Black eye and placed them in sarira casket in two separate corners of the world with his disciples instructing them to never allow the eyes to reunite. Wouldn't it nice if it ended there?
Well, professor Kim Joon-Cheol has his heart set on discovering the existence of the sarira caskets. Unfortunately, the media went out of their way to discredit him which made him shunned from the community. Full of resentment, he is determined to prove them all wrong. He bleeds his own blood in the Red casket and the Red Eye gets reawakened. The story goes, the Red Eye must go through the Seven Pillars (aka human vessels) before it can be successfully reunited. One of the protectors of the Black Eye casket, Bhante Ha-jung tasks a young monk named Cheongseok to take the Black eye casket and seek out Bhante Seon-hwa (whom has previously said TA TA to the monk life) to assist him in this quest to make sure this monster never walks the human world again.
Cheongseok and Seon-hwa are now on the search to essentially slay the only known 7th Pillar to prevent the Red eye and the Black eye from meeting. The Red eye is quickly stepping on each stone, each pillar just one step closer and now they have to race again time before the monster awakens.
This movie is a lot of things. Reminds me of a standard Kpop song, how they'll often mash up different genres in a single song and in many cases it is an actual bop! Dreamcatcher, looking at you đŸ‘€! I liked the fact there was perfectly timed yet sparse funny comedic moments. Luckily for the movie, it seemed to know when it was time to cut the laugh tracks. It didn't distract from the essence of the movie in my opinion. I mean, shit got real like real quick. Lovely cinematography and ok special effects. I have to say, this movie gets deep real fast and I'm not talking about the plot itself. There's layers especially with Seon-hwa. I wouldn't call this a standard predictable movie at all. It has an interesting dynamic in my opinion. Then again maybe don't take my word for it lol I'm barely restarting my love for horror so bare with me here por favor. (Or is it bear? Idk I'll edit when I figure that out.)
If this movie had a message, what would it be? It's time to wake up from your sad dream.
I'd say this movie is teen approved. No overly graphic depictions. Little to no cursing.
My verdict?
Gripping movie. Definitely a must watch.
