Paper Girls (2022) S1E1

Based on a comic book series in 2015, Amazon seemed very quick to produce this as a live action series. I watched only one episode and I now see why. This is pretty fresh. Got released on Amazon Prime literally 2 weeks ago. For the love of jeebus, don't compare this to Stranger Things.

UPDATE!!!! Future posts are now being moved to Horrortized TV so stop on by!

Fun Fact: Brad Pitt is credited as an executive producer for this show! He apparently co-founded the production company with his ex wife Jennifer Aniston. (Before they divorced)

Welcome to my season 1 review of Paper Girls, I will discuss plot points in each episode so if you don't want spoilers then I highly recommend you watch it on Amazon Prime Video. This is for episode 1 so buckle up.

Paper Girls starts off in 1988 with Erin. This is her first day of her job to deliver papers in a residential neighborhood. There's implications that she lives a very sheltered life and is a shy and soft spoken girl. However, she assures her mother she'll be fine.

She soons meets the other girls doing their paper runs in the same vicinity. Tiff, Mac and KJ. Being a little cautious it being Hell Day of '88, they decide to split into 2 groups. Erin gets jumped and stole Tiff's walkie talkie so these girls are out for blood. They think the bullies are in this random unfinished house but things take a weird turn and encounter 2 out of place men. They nope the fuck out of there and out of the house they see an odd looking new scenery.

Erin accidentally gets shot by Mac but then some weird shit happens. The same 2 mysterious out of place looking men take Erin and everyone is in this capsule looking thing. Once they step out of the capsule, they demand to get the fuck home. One of the guys is trying to explain to them that they are a long way from home. They are talking in static. ??? They get ambushed by these people in silver with these futuristic guns.

They run, run, run to Erin's house. And...they come to this disturbing realization that they just time skipped 31 years into the future. How do they know this? Because they come face to face with an adult version of Erin!!!

-----------++++++++---------

So this is my first impression of the show. It's got a good and eye catching premise. I am honestly impressed with the casting. The girls are impressive. I am especially in awe of Riley Lai Nelet who plays Erin. Maybe it's because Erin reminds me so much of myself. I really felt her pain and her emotions without her having to say a thing. The other actresses seem amazing. Another thing I like is that there is no obligatory comic relief goofy girl typecast. These 4 girls clearly have different personalities. We have the sheltered girl, the rich girl, the high IQ girl and the tomboy. Still typecasts but I really am looking forward to see their potential character developments and how their interactions with each other will further the growth of the series.

They don't rely much on the music soundtrack but when one does come in, it is pleasantly welcomed.

Looking forward to seeing how the plot unfolds with these underground people being hunted by these futuristic soldiers. I'm intrigued. This episode seemed it did a good job at building up the plot without dragging a whole lot.

Update: I rewrote this entire post on my TV blog so please go check it out! I have Completed most of the episode recaps for the season as well. Amazon cancelled this amazing show after 1 season but give it a watch. Honestly an amazing coming of age show.

Verdict?

Yeah
