Last Night in Soho (2021)

Last Night in Soho is a British psychological horror that came out in 2021.

Ellie is a soft spoken young woman who gets accepted into a London college to study in fashion as she seems drawn to 60's fashion in particular. She meets her roommate who she quickly deems as a snobby mean girl so she seems to have a hard time fitting in, save for John who is shown to be the only peer that treats her with compassion. She decides to probably seek a better living situation to get away from the toxic roommate.

On her first night in her new room, she has a breathtaking dream of a beautiful woman named Sandy who steps into a bustling night club life and gets swept off her feet by a man named Jack (played by Matt Smith).

Inspired by her dream, she goes to a salon and dyes her hair blond but despite this new look, Ellie seems to struggle more and more. Already reeling from the loss of her mother who killed herself and having mean girls snickering behind her back in class she is determined to keep on keeping on. Even at her new job at the pub, her colleagues are noticing her mental struggles.

Meanwhile, in the dreamworld, Sandy's life has taken a rapid decline as her lover, Jack, has forcibly pimped her out to various businessmen. Her dream turned nightmare is now seeping into the real world and she's getting visions and hallucinations of said nightmares.

So...what roller coaster of a ride this movie was! I thought this was an interesting view. I found it particularly hard to watch as I'll explain later in the disclaimer below. I thought the beginning of the movie dragged a bit and seemed to have too much filler. I felt it could have been condensed in half the time. Despite this, there was interesting imagery especially when demonstrating her dreamworld in separating Ellie from Sandy. I think the casting is phenomenal especially Matt Smith. Yeah so let me tell you something...

I used to be a big Doctor Who nerd. I first saw Matt Smith as the 11th Doctor and he was usually a goofy character with some serious scenes sprinkled in between. Call me crazy but I didn't (at the time) think Matt Smith was a good actor when playing a serious scene. I just didn't. Holy shit this movie really highlighted his sinister demeanor, I almost found it kinda hot.

Disclaimer though, I would not recommend to watch this movie if you have PTSD or highly sensitive to sex abuse trauma as it may be triggering. Same applies to mental health. Those who have issues with depression, self worthlessness and suicidal ideation I would not recommend watching this movie until you are in a much happier place.

I think this age demographic for Last Night in Soho would be more of an adult crowd. Maybe late teens if you're mature and in a good headspace (which is never! I kid, I kid)

If this movie had a message what would it be? I'm trying to figure that out myself.

Verdict?
Compelling story. Nice imagery. Flow of the story does get out of wack in some places but it's definitely worth a watch.
