In the Tall Grass (2019)
In the Tall Grass is a Canadian supernatural horror film that came out in 2019.
Based on a NOVELLA by Stephen King and his son Joe Hill (I don't blame him for his pen name. Can you imagine all of the puns this dude has heard though out his life? "Are you serious or are you Joe King?") ππππππππππππ
Reminder that this is a spoiler free review so with that being said let's get into it!
In the Tall Grass is about a brother and a pregnant sister on a road trip to San Diego but take a little detour on the side of the road and think it's a good idea to go into this random ass grass field because a kid is calling for help. Seriously though? This gives me "Somebody call IXII!!" vibes from Disney's Hercules.
They go into the tall grass but they themselves get lost but eventually see something's a little fucky around here. Their position in the grass changes when they think they are close but in a split second are further apart.
But HEY! They meet other people so this must mean this is good right?!
Well, they do meet this other family that got stuck there. So over a course of a few days they find out there's some timey wimey wibbly wobbly shit is going on here and seems to be getting more supernaturally sinister by the minute.
I like this one part where the father asks one of the people about his profession and after confirming he's like "Yeah, I can tell you're in the same career field as me. GET IT?! FIELD?! LMAOOOOOOO." Exaggerated paraphrase but yeah.
They just want to get out of this stupid grass already but what or why are they being prevented from leaving? They all need to put their heads together to figure that out.
So this movie missed the mark for me. Sorry, Mr. King. I did like how the ending was but it was a bit of an easy choice and predictable at that. Wasn't much sold on the acting a whole lot but maybe that's just a personal preference so that's not to say I think they're terrible actors. The concept is interesting though about the thought of being lost in a field but I didn't care much for the supernatural element to this movie. I mean, the supernatural force is pretty much the driving force. I also didn't get the sense of why certain characters developed how they did. Seemed like it was an obligatory well-someone-had-to-be-that-guy. I wished I got the essence of this movie but maybe I need to revisit this movie again to get it. It had potential but it's pretty surface level spooks.
Can you watch this movie with family? Maybe. I wouldn't think pre teen approved but mature adults can absolutely handle this movie.
Not really a worthwhile disclaimer for this movie. It's pretty tame in terms of triggers in my opinion. If you're sensitive to preggo chicks in horror movies you'll probably squirm a bit but I've heard of worse in other horror movies so this one is ok.
If this movie had a message what would it be? Sometimes, it's better off not being a good Samaritan.
That being said, what is my verdict?
This movie didn't really land with me. I've seen worse but I have seen way better.
