Fear Street - Part 1 1994 (2021)
The movie title itself being Fear Street really caught my eye. Even though by my own personal pessimism, I don't think there are many good quality horror movies that would stand the test of time as iconic such as Halloween or A Nightmare on Elm Street. I'm sure there are some contenders. Will it be Fear Street? Idk. Did people figure Friday the 13th would be iconic when it first came out? You just never know and that's the beauty of it. How unpredictable movies can be in terms of popularity. This one kind of looks like it's on to something though. After all, this trilogy features not one but TWO actresses from Stranger Things.
Then I found out that this is based on a book series from R.L. Stein. I guess I'm in for a treat.
Fear Street starts off as a girl working in a mall in the year 1994 where she is slain by a man who has just killed several other mall workers. OMG, it's Maya Hawke from Stranger Things.
I just want to say, I am in love with the song selection in this movie and it's only 15 minutes in and there was a handful of these bangers. Not only is it 90s (duh) but it's the rock stuff I grew up obsessed with. Nine Inch Nails, Garbage, Iron Maiden and Bush?! Holy shit this is like one big nostalgia trip for me.
Anyway back to the movie, it starts off with Deena reeling from her teenage breakup with ms cheerleader Sam. Sam moved away from Shadyside to Sunnyside. Pretty self explanatory why there's animosity between these rival highschools that seems to have put strain on their relationship which ultimately became their demise. Tensions arose at a vigil for the mall massacre victims which a fight with the rival football teams ensued. This led them to take it on the road which resulted in a car accident. Sam, damaged and bloodied unknowingly dips her gory hands into a cursed grave.
So disturbing the grave of Sarah Fier, a powerful witch, has resurrected Shadyside's past murderers. So like, that's no bueno.
So we got, Deena, her brother, bestie, obligatory quirky comic relief dude and of course Sam running away from these notorious blood thirsty killers from the past, including mr mall slayer. Wait holy shit there's a catch. They're actually attracted to Sam since she was the one who disturbed her shit. After a botched attempt to set a proper burial they take refuge in a pharmacy.
The plot thickens when they find out that the key to saving Sam is to attempt to contact a C. Berman who is a known survivor of a camp massacre in 1978. But first...how about we try to get rid of these stupid murderers?
I had to watch this movie twice and I seemed to appreciate it more the second time around. There's a couple cool things about this movie. The music! Got some Soundgarden and White Zombie jams. Secondly, I really love the color scheme of this movie. A lot of purples and blues. Very retro feel and they did a great job at that. Acting is ehhhhhhh but I'm just an old fart so what do I know? I'm not in the age demographic anyway.
Disclaimer though, there is some homophobic language and one insult which completely took me aback. I don't think there is anything else though. Some sexual content but no nudity.
If this movie had a message what would it be? Welcome to the suck!
My verdict?
Lovely movie. Also, you're going to love Part Two. I haven't seen it yet as of this writing but think I automatically will because this movie stars a certain red head from Stranger Things.
